If I ever hear another athlete say, in times of personal strife, "this really puts things in perspective," I think I'll go mad. You know what I mean: The whole "it's only a game" mentality is kind of insulting.

Of course they don't see it as just a game. Do you consider what you are the best at as only sort of important? This heaping of importance/immediateness helps sharpen the edge that makes them elite athletes.
