yesterday was stereogum's birthday, and the presents are overflowing from the comments section. I think the 'most generous' award has to go Jadedflower, and her stereogumsbirthday@gmail.com grab bag of goodies.

Strange Days on Planet Earth
Could the disappearance of wolves in Yellowstone be the reason for the park's depressed vegetation? And could the same be true about sharks, groupers, snappers et al. and the dying reefs around the world?
Could combinations of chemicals, individually deemed safe for the environment, be collectively poisoning the world's water and aquatic ecosystems? Why haven't chemical combinations been studied for their toxicity before now?

Ant Ambush, the Frozen Frog, and I located the moonwalking mating dance of some South American jungle bird. Well, I didn't locate video, only a hot lead. The episode also includes an interesting spatial twist on evolutionary theory, comparing different rainforests' canopy structures and investigating how they relate to the animals that live there, illustrating this via Borneo's uniqely tall and spacious canopy as the driving force behind the myriad of flying (on a rib and a prayer...who could it be. Believe it or not, its just me), or gliding, creatures that can only be found there. Darwin's prediction of a specialized moth coming true is pretty cool as well.

TTIKTDA - Keith is back in the house
The straight dope on the new Pope
Same !@#$ Different Day - the original album took something like 10 years to put together, and the remix takes 1. RS verdict : feels less coherent than his debut, but any thrill-starved hip-hop fan who missed that album would do just fine to start here.

O Canada!
My home and sativa land!
Truth, reason, and love, in all thy sons command.
With glowing bowls we see thee rise,
The True North high and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for weed.
God keep our stash glorious and green!
O Canada, we stand on guard for weed.
O Canada, we stand on guard for weed.
Is Japan moving further, and I don't mean tectonically as that would be 'farther', away from America?
CRTC :: t.dot based Russian Futurists. I've heard 'Our Pen's Out of Ink' and I dig it; any repeated mono-syllabic chorus has a good chance with me. 'Paul Simon' is up at pitchfork.
They'll be at the Bowery May 4th.

I'm sorry about that. This is called 'Paranoid Android'......This is hoping that George Bush doesn't declare World War III..." [download]

Verve Remixed 3 - the net has been abuzz for a couple of weeks now, and judging from Ari's review, the buzz seems well-founded. I first heard of the Verve Remix series a few years ago flying back from a funeral. The airline radio, gotta love Air Canada, included 'Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby' originally by Dinah Washington, and remixed by some 'hot new producer duo' I can't remember the name of (Google remembers them as Rae & Christian)

Insound's Top 10 So Far :: "Based mostly on what I believe in my heart to be true but also based on what I've overheard on the 'L' train to Brooklyn amongst people with record bags, arm sleeve tattoos and art school degrees. I'd say it's 90% me and 10% them. Maybe 70-30. Mind you, the Williamsburg kids can be very convincing."

Mogwai: It's been 5 years since T.Dawg told me about 'em in Kingston, and I have yet to hear a single track (not including tracks I've heard after many Molsons and BC kind, but do not remember). Well, that's all coming to an end.
