Kimone

For the past two years, the members of Kimone have placed every ounce of inspiration, frustration, self-examination, confusion, optimism, bitterness, and strength into writing and creating The Mill. Musically, they’ve streamlined their orchestral arrangements to be leaner and more economical: saying more with less. Lyrically, story-like narratives play a bigger role than the usual pronoun-obsessed “rock song,” as carefully selected words and phrases embody multiple meanings. Compositions were written and re-written, keys were changed in search of the most suitable melody, and prose were mulled over to avoid repetition of words / descriptions.

Not that I mean to be selfish in the wake of such a large disaster, but I'm really glad I got to visit NO/LA before Katarina struck. NO/LA beat me up, spit me out a day late(because of Hurricane Dennis that missed, but was touted as the possible levee-buster), and I was sick for a week back home.

I hope the city, and everywhere that has been affected, can recover, but if it doesn't I consider myself especially luck to have witnessed her outrageous liberties and fine hospitality.

Programmable rice cooker. What a genius idea. Stir-fry = 10 minutes. Accompanying rice = 45 minutes. No longer.

"This is my Boom Stick"

I actually attended a book reading by the Chin in Northern NJ for the promotional tour of "If Chins Could Kill...." with a budding film industry pal (Say hi to the Bound chick for me, you lucky dog). He was dry and hilarious, as usual. When it got down to the actual signing of books, and me not wanting to be bothersome, I clammed up like a idjit.

Verbal "KITT V VICKI", "Edgar Street"(this is the only tune I've heard, and is most impressive, wandering here and there, from floaty jam rock to a technical time change thrown in for fun, or something, to cool down sections that explode, always coming back to the main theme when the meanderings have left you...some place else), "Buildings Bend"

On August 26, 1951 Leaf defenceman Bill Barilko and his fishing companion Dr. Henry Hudson perished in a plane crash after returning from a fishing trip in Northern Ontario.

Four months earlier, Barilko had scored the game winning goal in overtime of the 1951 Stanley Cup Final. The remains of Barilko, Hudson and the wreckage of the Fairchild 24 plane would not be found for another eleven years. Coincidentally the Maple Leafs did not win another Stanley Cup until 1962.

Barilko's tale is immortalized in the Tragically Hip song "Fifty Mission Cap". The Leaf defenceman's biogrpahy "Barilko - Without A Trace" written by Kevin Shea is available through Fenn Publishing

DJ DNA's "When Day Breaks, Night Falls" is sweet. And goes great with DJ Logic's "French Quarter" funk organ breakdown.

Or better put "Well-conceived song structures and cunningly creative sample selections hold your attention while absorbing DJ DNA's reconstructions. The Sacramento-based artist paints staggering scratch patterns over skillfully sawed breaks that tend toward the obscure. He's a savvy beat scientist, and he bolsters his creations by topping them off with opportune vocals."

you know those songs. the ones that make the hair on the back of your neck stand on end. you know what I'm talking about. you don't? really?....ah, you're messing with me. well, they are rarely rockin', and usually ballady, but always honest. maybe something about love or life thrown in, for good measure. well, i just found a new one. "til Kingdom Come" by the almighty and supposedly now-too-big-to-be-cool Coldplay.

steal my heart
and hold my tongue
i feel my time
my time has come
let me in
unlock the door
i never felt this way before

and the wheels just keep on turnin'
the drummer begins to drum
i don't know which way im going
i don't know which way i've come

hold my head
inside your hands
i need someone
who understands
i need someone
someone who hears
for you i've waited all these years.

for you i'd wait
'til Kingdom Come
until my day
my day is done
and say you'll come
and set me free
just say you'll wait
you'll wait for me

in your tears
and in your blood
in your fire
and in your flood
i hear you laugh
i heard you sing
i wouldn't change a single thing

and the wheels just keep on turnin'
the drummers begins to drum
i don't know which way im goin'
i don't know what i've become

for you i'd wait
'til Kingdom Come
until my days
my days are done
say you'll come
and set me free
just say you'll wait
you'll wait for me.

One thing that bugs me: the everchanging landscape of musical genres & sub genres, to the atomic level, so much so that each genre is now defined by what it follows, what it isn't, and whether the guitarist checks out his shoes while playing. My one true love, and I despise the vernacular of the supposed officianados.

Dipshits dropping lines like, "I'm not really into urban, rain-forest ragga". Post-rock? Neo-Rock? Post-Neo-Geek-Jock-Rock? Here's a question...Does it rock? That's all I need to know. And is all I want to know. Keep your morphing-genres-like-changing-underwear out my face.

You remind me of fools waxin' about white widow, northern lights, and acapulco gold. Just pack it and pass it, bub. I can't tell from the look or smell. And neither can you.

That is all. Carry on.

do what'cha wanna do

the groovy rhythm guitar, the righteous horn and piano exclamations, the subtley jogging bass line, the appealingly simple lyrics...its your thang. Actually, the title of this funk anthem is "It's Your Thing" by The Isley Brothers released in 1969.

global village, my ass!

Here is a brilliant iPod accessory, which far exceeds the design of the Griffin iFM, and the bloody thing won't ship out of the UK.

The interweb, though enlightening, is increasingly frustrating the better you get at searching around inside of it. This is the second day in a row I've located an overseas consumer product I would purchase (that's money in your pockets, bozos) but due to restrictions or simple availability, my hard earned cash remains unspent.

Total Fishheads

First off, I love this show: dream locales, dream water, dream fish. Not to mention he seems extremely likeable and stand-up guy, to be really corny. Go check out his band, Total Fishheads' CD samples.

Matt Pailes' band "Ras Matthew" has got his album 'Creation Sound and Friends' samples up over at IPath...speaking on the ragga/dub tip, Roots Manuva dropped it like it was damn cold in Oslo. His first doody was over-hyped when it came out on Ninjatune/BigDada, and that was half the problem...but I may have to give it another listen.

Heard it buying coffee this morning. Luckily my HR manager, who was pouring his coffee as I sugared mine, knew that Jackie Wilson sang the song. Which led me back here to my cube/cell five minutes later to find soul-source, whose main attraction for me is the sounds. From the gallery of photos (the url provides a slight hint as well), it appears the website is based in Ireland/UK,(I never know how to collectively refer to that region of planet earth) which reminds me of the vocal R&B show Sully's relative's put on bar-side late-night after his wedding in County Kilkenny, last October. Them Irish love them some R&B...Blackest white folk on the planet.

And I whip my loving arms around you

no more beta band ,except a best of, which has the possibility of generating that commercial success that was lacking throughout the band's lifespan. Beta albums always have a few gems, but the lazy and slow-rolling nature of their songs can test one's patience. but a 'best of' might solve the antsy-listener dilemma: should I stay or should I skip?
