"Immaculate Heart" by AAS - otherwise known as American Analog Set, who is featuring new downloads each week this summer, such as: "Punk as Fuck" - recorded in Houston 09/12/01 - "This was an out of the ordinary evening. It was the day after 9/11 and we were two weeks into a three month tour. We were so close to home, we could've (maybe should've?) turned back, but we pushed through. I remember most people were really glad to see us and we were happy to provide a little escape from CNN. This song was one of the older ones on "Know By Heart," but still ... the album was only a week old when this was recorded, and somehow it still sounds young to me.-AK"

Bathe or Baste? - "A bull shark swims in the waters near visitors to Mimamar Beach, Fla. Sunday, June 25, 2005, one day after a bull shark attacked (and killed) a 14-year-old girl. This sighting is less than a quarter mile from Saturday's attack site."

- "I'm Looking Through You" by The Posies [via] - I really like this song. Alaught!

- "Bridges & Balloons" - by The Decemberists [via]

- from MFL - "Honestly" by Palomar, on selfstarter, which also has signed Clem Snide, who I once saw perform for his parents in NYC before a Ben Folds set, accompanied by 2-degree-separated Snuzz, who to this day continues to pull metal and pound wood while checkin' the damage.

- "Polarizer" by Joe Thomas [via]

- "Skin & Bones" by Fear of Music on blowout [via] - a dash of radiohead pandamonium.

Viva la revolution!

Just another large scale riot Chinese Communist Party leaders couldn't contain or keep quiet. This is terrific, considering it is becoming a trend, and that I have been fascinated with Chinese social justice and its civil rights movement ever since I did my 8th grade research paper on Tiananmen. For me, it still doesn't compute how populations allow themselves to be bullied - the power of numbers....it really is an amazing, if not frightening, phenomenon.

It is no wonder why the government is investing in mobile bases to "dispense 'crowd [dispersing] rounds.'"

"The sad thing is these nuts who founded this country fled Europe because of religious persecution. Good trade for Europe...we should just split into two different countries. Then, after our stem cell research gives us the cure for all these diseases, they'll all be trying to get across the border for our medicine, but our minutemen won't let them. And we'll have a lot of minutemen. I think I'll be a minuteman. Sorry, but our scientists worked very hard to come up with a cure for Parkinson's and there's only enough medicine for our people. So beat it." [via]

My Morning Jacket

"We'll sing an a capella version of "We Built This City (On Rock n' Roll)" while a 30 foot long old west wagon rises from underneath us and lifts us off into orbit as we become the 2nd band to travel in space (behind Wyld Stallyns of course)."

Particle - via 'on the ground' recommendation of Bonnaroo attendee....more later.

Is that a Tonton?

As luck would have it, if passing a kidney stone can be considered lucky, I was able to enjoy the original StarWars triology late last week, while heavily medicated, which tends to increase the enjoyment factor of media for me. Not the 'originals' mind you, but the remasters and 'bonus materials'("Empire of Dreams" documentary and 3 vignettes) of the remaster box set.

Vader is a dog on a leash in 'A New Hope.'(not that the dialogue hints at this or anything) Not that he struck me as the most independent of villains, but he's Governor (in a military uniform - what a nice former Republican) Tarkin's bitch, much more than my memory once served. Luke is a whiny bitch.

Empire is, Empire. Some of the dialogue is a little too dumbed-down ("This goes there, and that goes there." Come on Han, I know you're light on the academics being a pirate, but that is plain weak.) However, this is Vader at his best: humaness, even in its basest, selfish form, is being run out of town by the machine directive that almost consumes him.

Revenge of the Jedi (as it was almost released as) is the first of the triology my parents took me to(not very pop culture minded folk), and is pretty freakin' cool. Except for Luke's repeated batting of Vader's right arm, as he poses, er, falls on the skywalk's railing. Very unjedi-like, if you asked me.

But a question that I feel has been left unanswered in the six films is what the fuck is Yoda? Is he a unique being? A member of a species? A badly deformed freak? For someone that instructed jedi for 800 years, you'd think more would be known about him. her?

"...Harcourt rarely pays attention to lyrics. What he listens for, he says, is primarily a sound and a feeling...rather than literary content" [via]

I feel like I know this guy. For someone who listens to music almost constantly, I rarely pay attention to, or eventually learn lyrics, regardless of repetition. I do know some songs, but its a red-faced ratio. I'm basically the worst possible candidate for karioke (see, i can't even spell it) before you consider my actual vocal talents, or lack thereof. But I've always been able to hum the sounds of the lyrics, and as a result sometimes I end up inventing/molding meaning to the sounds themselves, and probably to a large hunk of my subcon.

Must check out his online show.

I don't know how I feel about this. It seems tinfoil hat to the nth. It seems beyond any reasonable probability that such a coordinated attack could be pulled-off.

It fits with Arab-hatred of America heavily reported on by the MSM. It fits with the 'need' for a new Pearl Harbor, which sets in motion the rest of the neocon's agenda. It seems odd that a proper forensic investigation hasn't been conducted, especially considering that recently a jetliner was picked off the bottom of the Atlantic, piece by piece, to the point of resembling the plane it once was to get at the cause of the crash.

I don't know...I don't like Bush and Cheney and the like, to whom I'll readily assign such sins as greed and lust, but this is pure evil if true.

Randolph man makes history in Rutgers graduate program

By Matt Manochio, Daily Record

Roy Bumiller is about to make history at Rutgers University.

He's set to become the school's first male feminist with a master's degree.

Bumiller, 27, a Morristown native who lives in Randolph, is due to graduate next week from Rutgers University-Newark with a master's degree in English with a concentration in women's studies.

He'll be the first man to receive a master's degree in that program, which has been offered at the school since 1970. The school has had undergraduate males minor in the program, but never has had a man earn a master's with that concentration.

"I've always been interested in social justice," Bumiller said during a phone interview Thursday.

"I think studying feminism is the most direct way to address social justice."

Bumiller plans to teach English at the high school level and plans to use his background in feminist theory in his lesson plans.

He's preparing to teach English and American studies in Japan starting this summer.

Bumiller said he was primarily the only male in classrooms full of women for his women's studies courses.

"It was absolutely positive," he said of the experience. "I never felt any ill will or 'what are you doing here?' us-against-them aspect of it."

Jyl Josephson, director of the women's studies program at Rutgers-Newark, said she appreciated having Bumiller in the program.

"It's really great to have feminist men in this program," she said, adding that Bumiller took part in women's symposium during the spring. It was a "panel of young men who are feminists talking about whether men can be feminists."

Bumiller said he taught at an all-boys school prior to his master's degree studies and was drawn to feminist theory, in part, because of how boys treated other boys.

"I had to deal with a lot of young kids who had no exposure or little exposure to women," he said, adding that some of the boys' behavior was "outright misogyny."

Bumiller said the boys wouldn't do well at something, say sports, other boys would heckle them using derogatory words associated with women.

"That bothered me," he said.

Josephson said it's important to have men involved in women's studies because it can only lead to social change.

"When you talk about any issue of inequality ⿦ that it's important
for people of the majority group, or the dominant group, to attend to those issues," she said.

Bumiller and Josephson said part of the discussions on the panel centered around men questioning the idea of masculinity - not in the sense of sexual orientation.

"It's about what it means to be a man, more (about) men who are questioning traditional roles of masculinity," Josephson said. "Women's studies has made some of those questions possible."

(that seems to be the word of the day)

ok, i'm feeling a bit optimistic. about hockey. for the first time. feels like the very first time. well, at least in a while. and since this blog was created as a distraction so i wouldn't torment and annoy spofites with venom that really isn't meant for them, and said venom has receded quite a bit, maybe some puck talk would do me some good.

offwingeric finally gets the props i've been trying to spread for years, and here's another example of why I think so: the first l'ockey carnivale at offwing. Can't wait for his morning recaps to start up again.

the bird has some intriguing news concerning jaromir's bloated contract. Seems the caps and rangers will be splitting the bill, and after the rollback that is on the table, jagr's cost seems comically appropriate at $4m and change, given his frequent injuries, lack of consistency, and one-way play. (he did look like he found a home with the blue shirts last last season though)

canuck cubby hole is a daily must. Tom's irreverant and well thought-out musings are a delight. He's off-beat, like me, and thats tough to find on the regular. He's been anti-league for a long time, and has provided a virtual buddy to stick out this bullshit with. many thanks bro. now would ya send some bc kind my way?

Jes, well, he's kept hope alive with his levity and humor, international coverage, and shit like this. Did I mention he's a ukie too? Word up Jes! btw, my request for kind goes for you too.

hockey ghost is becoming a more frequent stop, as he seems to weed through the canadian MSM pro league horse kaka. he's tough to link to, actually impossible, but here's a sample;

the Toronto Star's Damien Cox claimed the PA was never interested in conducting a joint audit of the NHL's books and never had any interested in establishing revenue, and are only know doing so because the owners held firm throughout the lockout.

Yet according to NHLPA director Ted Saskin, in an interview I conducted with him last summer, prior to the lockout, the PA tried to establish league revenues several years ago.
Which is what got me on the players side to begin with; the league used bogus revenue figures to justify the lockout, which the PA disputed and wanted to verify...and all the league did was pay someone to agree with them. Phooey! So yeah, i dig Slimer.

Mirtle, apart from rhyming with my Mom's birthplace, needs to write more. the man has got more to say, and i'd like to hear it. Especially his thoughts on Tasca's take of journalists vs. bloggers.

and this hack can suck it. I wish I had this blog up and running quite a while ago so I could revisit some of the thoughts I had when Iraq became policy: right around the time the public discussion (Should we invaded?) was first introduced in mid 2002, but still months before the discussion made its way to Good Morning America in late 2002, early 2003. It just seemed obvious to me, because nothing had happened in Iraq, and then all of a sudden it was a national security priority. Well, I guess the Downing Street Memo had a little something to do with that policy shift, which has garnered curiously little US media coverage. There has to be an intrepid reporter out there willing to question this administration on such a fundamental issue. The press room in the White House can't be that fascist, can it?

Update: Is Nader that brave individual?
