Just another large scale riot Chinese Communist Party leaders couldn't contain or keep quiet. This is terrific, considering it is becoming a trend, and that I have been fascinated with Chinese social justice and its civil rights movement ever since I did my 8th grade research paper on Tiananmen. Is that a Tonton?

As luck would have it, if passing a kidney stone can be considered lucky, I was able to enjoy the original StarWars triology late last week, while heavily medicated, which tends to increase the enjoyment factor of media for me. Not the 'originals' mind you, but the remasters and 'bonus materials'("Empire of Dreams" documentary and 3 vignettes) of the remaster box set.

Vader is a dog on a leash in 'A New Hope.'(not that the dialogue hints at this or anything) Not that he struck me as the most independent of villains, but he's Governor (in a military uniform - what a nice former Republican) Tarkin's bitch, much more than my memory once served. Luke is a whiny bitch.

Empire is, Empire. Some of the dialogue is a little too dumbed-down ("This goes there, and that goes there." Come on Han, I know you're light on the academics being a pirate, but that is plain weak.) However, this is Vader at his best: humaness, even in its basest, selfish form, is being run out of town by the machine directive that almost consumes him.

Revenge of the Jedi (as it was almost released as) is the first of the triology my parents took me to(not very pop culture minded folk), and is pretty freakin' cool. Except for Luke's repeated batting of Vader's right arm, as he poses, er, falls on the skywalk's railing. Very unjedi-like, if you asked me.

But a question that I feel has been left unanswered in the six films is what the fuck is Yoda? Is he a unique being? A member of a species? A badly deformed freak? For someone that instructed jedi for 800 years, you'd think more would be known about him. her?

I feel like I know this guy. For someone who listens to music almost constantly, I rarely pay attention to, or eventually learn lyrics, regardless of repetition. I do know some songs, but its a red-faced ratio. I'm basically the worst possible candidate for karioke (see, i can't even spell it) before you consider my actual vocal talents, or lack thereof. But I've always been able to hum the sounds of the lyrics, and as a result sometimes I end up inventing/molding meaning to the sounds themselves, and probably to a large hunk of my subcon.

I don't know how I feel about this. It seems tinfoil hat to the nth. It seems beyond any reasonable probability that such a coordinated attack could be pulled-off.

Randolph man makes history in Rutgers graduate program

Roy Bumiller is about to make history at Rutgers University.

He's set to become the school's first male feminist with a master's degree.

Bumiller, 27, a Morristown native who lives in Randolph, is due to graduate next week from Rutgers University-Newark with a master's degree in English with a concentration in women's studies.

He'll be the first man to receive a master's degree in that program, which has been offered at the school since 1970. The school has had undergraduate males minor in the program, but never has had a man earn a master's with that concentration.

"I've always been interested in social justice," Bumiller said during a phone interview Thursday.

"I think studying feminism is the most direct way to address social justice."

Bumiller plans to teach English at the high school level and plans to use his background in feminist theory in his lesson plans.

He's preparing to teach English and American studies in Japan starting this summer.

Bumiller said he was primarily the only male in classrooms full of women for his women's studies courses.

"It was absolutely positive," he said of the experience. "I never felt any ill will or 'what are you doing here?' us-against-them aspect of it."

Jyl Josephson, director of the women's studies program at Rutgers-Newark, said she appreciated having Bumiller in the program.

"It's really great to have feminist men in this program," she said, adding that Bumiller took part in women's symposium during the spring. It was a "panel of young men who are feminists talking about whether men can be feminists."

Bumiller said he taught at an all-boys school prior to his master's degree studies and was drawn to feminist theory, in part, because of how boys treated other boys.

"I had to deal with a lot of young kids who had no exposure or little exposure to women," he said, adding that some of the boys' behavior was "outright misogyny."

Bumiller said the boys wouldn't do well at something, say sports, other boys would heckle them using derogatory words associated with women.

"That bothered me," he said.

Josephson said it's important to have men involved in women's studies because it can only lead to social change.

"When you talk about any issue of inequality ⿦ that it's important
for people of the majority group, or the dominant group, to attend to those issues," she said.

Bumiller and Josephson said part of the discussions on the panel centered around men questioning the idea of masculinity - not in the sense of sexual orientation.

"It's about what it means to be a man, more (about) men who are questioning traditional roles of masculinity," Josephson said. "Women's studies has made some of those questions possible."

I wish I had this blog up and running quite a while ago so I could revisit some of the thoughts I had when Iraq became policy: right around the time the public discussion (Should we invaded?) was first introduced in mid 2002, but still months before the discussion made its way to Good Morning America in late 2002, early 2003. It just seemed obvious to me, because nothing had happened in Iraq, and then all of a sudden it was a national security priority. Well, I guess the Downing Street Memo had a little something to do with that policy shift, which has garnered curiously little US media coverage. There has to be an intrepid reporter out there willing to question this administration on such a fundamental issue. The press room in the White House can't be that fascist, can it?
